Azimut Yachts Becomes Official Technical Partner of Ferrari Hypersail

Azimut Yachts and Ferrari have joined forces on Azimut Ferrari Hypersail, an innovative ocean sailing project that combines advanced engineering, lightweight materials and high-performance racing technology.

The collaboration brings together two leading Italian brands with a shared commitment to innovation and technological development.

The project is based at Azimut’s shipyard in Livorno, Italy, which serves as the operational headquarters for the initial development and testing of Ferrari Hypersail, an advanced foiling ocean racing prototype.

At the centre of Azimut’s contribution is a specially transformed Fly 72 motor yacht, designed to support the prototype during its testing programme.

Azimut Ferrari Hypersail : a 72′ Fly with 4,000 HP and Six Tonnes Lighter

The Azimut Fly 72 × Ferrari Hypersail has been extensively modified by Azimut’s Technical Department in collaboration with Ferrari.

The engineering challenge was to create a support vessel capable of towing the Ferrari Hypersail prototype at speeds approaching 30 knots, including when the sailing yacht is lifted above the water on its foils, before its mast and sails are installed.

To achieve this, engineers focused on weight reduction, increased propulsion power and structural reinforcement.

Through the extensive use of carbon fibre and advanced composite materials, the yacht’s weight has been reduced by approximately six tonnes.

Meanwhile, a specially developed propulsion configuration delivers 4,000 horsepower, approximately twice the power of the conventional Fly 72.

The vessel also features a dedicated towing system designed to withstand the significant loads generated during high-speed testing.

The result is a unique combination of luxury yacht architecture and high-performance racing engineering.

A Dedicated Support Vessel for Ferrari Hypersail

Beyond its technical modifications, the Fly 72’s interior layout has been adapted to meet the requirements of the Ferrari Hypersail team, led by Enrico Voltolini.

During the initial testing phases, the yacht will operate as a technical support platform. It may subsequently accommodate team members and VIP guests during international events associated with the project.

This transformation demonstrates the versatility of Azimut’s engineering and its ability to develop solutions for applications beyond conventional recreational yachting.

Azimut Ferrari Hypersail : A Shared Vision of Innovation

The partnership reflects the technological ambitions of two leading representatives of Made in Italy.

Azimut has long invested in research and development, particularly in lightweight construction, composite materials and technologies designed to improve yacht performance and efficiency.

Andrea Antichi, General Manager of Azimut Yachts, has highlighted the company’s independent R&D department and its commitment to developing solutions that do not yet exist on the market.

Azimut Ferrari Hypersail provides an opportunity to apply this expertise to one of the most demanding environments in sailing: high-performance ocean racing.

Although technologies developed for racing may not transfer directly to production yachts, projects such as Azimut Ferrari Hypersail can contribute to future advances in naval engineering, structural efficiency and yacht design.
